Spring into health

Although it may still be chilly outside (and warnings of snow linger), spring is just around the corner and there is no better time to re-evaluate your exercise routine – or to simply start one! I find that spring is the perfect time to shake off those winter blues and spring into action. It’s also a great idea to set some goals for the summer and start working towards them. Perhaps join an organised race and run your first 5k? First 10k? Or why not try a triathlon?
Let’s admit that winter is tough on most people. Don’t get me wrong, I love the winter wonderland and skating during the holidays. Even during the winter, I run every single day as it’s such a big part of my life. However, the cold, dark days are not the most motivating and the lack of sunshine can often increase feelings of depression for many. The decreased levels of Vitamin D weaken our immune system. With the arrival of March comes daylight savings and longer exposure to sunlight – a boost of vitamin D and feeling a boost in your overall well-being.
With longer days and increased sunshine comes the opportunity to spend more time in the great outdoors and enjoy it even more! It’s the perfect time to get outside for a hike, a walk or start running. In a few weeks you can also move out your yoga mat and workout gear outside. If you are just starting your journey, try going for a walk on your lunch break or walk to pick up groceries. If you already lead an active lifestyle, try increasing your duration and doing more activities outside. This is the time of the year when my runs get longer, and I feel better and better after each activity.
Finally, let’s not forget about nutrition which is essential for a well-rounded lifestyle. Spring is the perfect time to start stocking up on fresh, local, in season produce, one of my favourites being asparagus and peas. So here is a weekend adventure for you: pick up your favourite tote bag and hit up a local farmer’s market for a fun activity which will also be great for your health!
If you missed out on some of your new year’s resolutions, don’t worry. Many of us did for one reason or another. Just remember it’s never too late to start. Our favourite events
My first marathon on the streets of Toronto and ending along the beautiful waterfront. The event will take place May 7th. It does include a range of activities – 5k, 10k, half and full marathon.

An iconic run, in downtown Toronto which takes place on Sunday May 14th. This was the first official 10k run which Rajni and I completed together! In addition, it’s for a great cause!

You’ll see us running this race on Sunday June 17th along the picturesque Toronto waterfront. You’ll be supporting a great community initiative for kids and you’ll get a chance to meet us after the race!
A quick drive from Toronto, this triathlon is a great opportunity to try something new in Grimsby on July 16th. I competed in this race in 2019 – 750m swim, 25k bike ride, 10k run. I didn’t have a wetsuit and my bike was borrowed but I did it and it was the best feeling! The distances have changed but lots of great races happening. You could even try yourself at a tri with a 375m swim, 10k bike ride and 2.5k run.
