Not another new year’s resolution

If you have never followed through on your new year’s resolutions don’t worry, this year is different. No it really is! This is because YOU are different. You’re not the same person you were a year ago. Even if life doesn’t seem all that different, you have no doubt learned something new about the world and about yourself. See, the cool thing about a new year, a new day, and every moment is that you have a choice. You have the choice to eat better, the choice to workout, you have the choice to wake up earlier, to read more, to do whatever it is your heart desires, and you even have the choice to not do any of it.

You have the power to change your life. We are masters of our own destinies! It is not easy, but if you lean into the discomfort and focus on all that you have to gain from those moments of discomfort, who knows where you’ll end up!

Let’s do an exercise together (no dumbbells needed here, don’t worry). Okay, close your eyes and picture yourself a year from now. You stuck to your new year’s resolution(s). What does life look like? Where are you? What are you wearing? If you are with someone, who are you with? What are you doing? How do you feel? Sit with all of that for a period of time.

Maybe your new year’s resolution was to save enough money for a trip, and now you’re in India wearing leather pants and eating paneer tacos (not sure why there are leather pants involved, but hey this is your visualization, not mine). My point is, no matter how far-fetched it seems it might not actually be that far-fetched. If you’re willing to let go of the past and put forth the effort, you can absolutely achieve your goal. And if you don’t start right on January 1st, don’t sweat it. Try again for the 2nd and keep going until you are on your way.

I have to work very hard to convince myself to do even the most minuscule task that most people seem to just be able to do. What is working for me right now is a little mantra I’ve been saying to myself: “You’re never going to feel like doing it, so I might as well do it now.”. Another thing that pushes me is the fear of not reaching a goal I have set. I am terrified of looking in the mirror in five years having not changed for the better. So, get scared!
