Super snacks for Super Bowl

Super Bowl may be an evening dedicated to football, but for many it’s about getting together with friends and having a feast as you watch the game. The most popular party snacks for the event are the not so whole food type of finger foods - pizza, tater tots, chips and dips washed off with pints of beer.

While we believe that you can enjoy everything in moderation, there are also many healthier options you can enjoy during the Super Bowl (or any event), especially if you are committed to eating a nutritious diet.

  • Take out from the oven and top with pizza sauce and shredded cheeses. Place the tray back in the oven and bake for another 5-10 minutes until the cheese melts.

  • Top with fresh / dried oregano and basil and serve.

High protein dip with veggies

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cottage cheese

  • 1 cup Greek yogurt

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • 1 tsp dried parsley

  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard

  • 2 tbsp lemon juice

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Vegetables: Carrots, Celery sticks, Peppers, Mushrooms, Broccoli, Cauliflower

Directions

  • For the dip, add all ingredients to a bowl and mix with a spoon until well combined and smooth (avoid using a blender as it may liquify it).

  • Place in an airtight container and refrigerate for an hour to allow the flavours to combine. Serve with vegetables on the side.

*the dip will store in the fridge for a day or two. You can also make a smaller batch by simply reducing the ingredients by half.

Chicken wings (served with veggies and high protein dip from above)

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs chicken wings

  • 4 tbsp Frank’s hot sauce

  • 2 tbsp BBQ sauce

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  • Boil water in a large pot with 1 tbsp salt. Add the chicken wings, slightly reduce the heat and simmer for about 20 minutes.

  • In the meantime, preheat the oven to 400F and line baking tray with parchment paper.

  • Once the 20 minutes is up, take the chicken wings out and drain them in a colander. Dry them with a kitchen towel.

  • Prepare the sauce by combing all the ingredients in a bowl - hot sauce, bbq sauce, garlic and onion powder, and salt and pepper to taste.

  • Coat the chicken wings with the sauce - you can do it in a large bowl or right on the baking tray. Make sure they are coated well, spread evenly on the baking tray and bake for 15-20 minutes.

  • Serve with vegetable sticks and the high protein dip from above.

Super Bowl strawberries

Ingredients

  • Strawberries

  • Dark chocolate

  • White chocolate

Directions

  • Wash the strawberries and pat dry.

  • Prepare tray with parchment paper and melt the dark chocolate in a double boiler.

  • Once melted and smooth, grab each strawberry by the green and dip in the chocolate.

  • Continue until all strawberries are covered and place the tray in the fridge to let the chocolate cool and set.

  • In the meantime, prepare the white chocolate by melting it in a double boiler. Pour into freezer bag, place in a mug and allow it to cool for about 10 minutes (you don’t want it to be too runny and hot but it shouldn’t start to set yet).

  • Take out the strawberries from the fridge, cut a small hole in the freezer bag with the white chocolate and pipe white lines on the dark chocolate to give it the appearance of a football.
